The PCO youth who gave up their personal time to serve beverages during the event. They then returned the money they made (75 RO) back to the Lord during Friday's service!

The PCO's (Protestant Church in Oman) first official cookbook! While it may be true that "too many cooks spoil the broth", you never can have too many cooks when putting together a congregational cookbook! ("Variety is the spice of life!")

There are recipes from all over the world in this cookbook! (and it only costs 5 RO) Proceeds to the proposed Ruwi church building. I have put 2 of my favorites here as examples. (Both being desserts of course, ha!ha!)

This friendly and selfless group of people were in charge of the "souvenir table" to help raise funds for the building project. Our Filipino Christians are so servant-hearted and self-giving as they serve the LORD here in Oman!

Wise Men from OMAN?! The Khor Rori Francincense Trail Site

It is well known that the wise men coming to see the LORD Jesus just after his birth brought gold, frankincense and myrh. Not much else is known about them. Some speculate that they came from Persia as Daniel would have left them some knowledge of the prophecies concerning the coming messiah. There are some who strongly believe that at least some of the wise men were from Oman. Frankincense is produced from the resin of the boswelia tree and Oman was most famous for exporting this over the centuries. Interesting! Some of the earliest worshippers of our LORD might have been Omani!!!

The coral can be razor-sharp and you REALLY do have to be careful!

ADAM?! Where is Adam?!

Yes, sand, sand and more sand. That sums up the whole 1000 km trip from Muscat to Salalah with occasional stops for gas on the way of course.

Adam is 295 km from Muscat. I had first guessed that the town is named after Adam, the first man created by God, but have come to learn that it most likely means "the fertile ground". One of my students is from Adam and when he asked the other students if they knew what was in Adam, some of them answered, "Yes, dirt and a petrol station!" He seemed disappointed by the answer, ha!ha!

What do I, Andrew Brown, have in common with The Sultan's Palace? Well...we were both created in 1972!

My students told me that The Sultan's Palace is known as "Al Alam" ("The Flag Palace"?!) in Arabic. It is not the only residence of His Majesty who normally lives elsewhere in Oman but it is his ceremonial palace. I was surprised to hear that it is reported to have a bowling alley in the basement!

This is Hee-Jung Lee who was one of my best students at the Catholic University of Korea in 2000. She is now traveling the world selling parts for her company. It was a real honor to show her around Muscat with Che while she was here for a few days on a business trip. Thanks for taking the time to see us, Hee-Jung, and we hope that you'll be back again sometime soon!

The Sultanate marks National Day every year on November 18, but the holidays are traditionally given later. (on Nov 25-26 this year making it a 4 day weekend next week; Tues-Friday!)

Che and I decided it was time for us to see the coast of Oman by boat so we went on a 4 hour boat cruise in the waters around Muscat organized by Gulf Leisure Tours. (www.gulfleisure.com )

Che at the spot our caption dropped anchor. We swam and snorkeled here for about 30 minutes. This was the only place you could see through the glass bottom. There were so many colorful fish and we even saw some giant turtles! Sorry I wasn't able to get any good pics. I simply enjoyed my time with the love of my life and wasn't thinking of photos...

The boat kept close to shore on the way back to the Marina which was more exciting than the ride out. (They should mention that 1.5 hours of the 3.5 hour tour is an uneventful rapid ride out to the deeper part of the sea. Then again, maybe it was uneventful simply because there weren't any whales or dolphins on the day we went out...not the best season for dolphin/whale sighting someone mentioned.)

Now this is what I really call traveling in style. This boat, The Al Said, (Al is arabic for "The" so I guess I just called it "The The Said"?!...) is His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Al Said's private boat, I'm told. This was later in the day docked at Mattrah Port.

Che doesn't normally like getting her photo taken but she has been such a good sport letting me take so many photos of her as I told her that it's at least one way my family and friends can get acquainted with her before we wed! :-)

Most of the 5 star hotels in Oman are great places to stop in and have a coffee and snack. (and most are reasonably priced as well!) An elderly gentleman even came and played the piano in the lounge while we were there which was an added bonus of course.

Obviously not the best photo of me out there but there are 2 reasons for posting it:
1) In the spirit of "fairness" to Che who asks "Why do you post so many photos of me and almost none of you!?" She insisted on taking this photo and so I should post it to honor her.
and 2) To show people that men also can have "bad hair days", ha!ha! Seriously though, what's up with my hair poking up like that?! I guess a 3rd reason for posting it is would be for you to see more of the comfortable atmosphere in the hotel lounge. Cozy place!

"Maid in Oman"

When I think about how God brought me here to Oman to meet the love of my life, (through very uncomfortable circumstances which I didn't understand at the time...) who has been working as a maid here in Oman during the past 7 years for a family at PDO (Petroleum Development Oman), it reminds me of the romantic movie, "Maid in Manhattan". Far more impressive than some entertaining storyline, God, in His sovereignty, looks out for the well-being of his servants and makes our joy complete in His perfect timing.

This is the first time, in teaching at college/university, that I have classes that run for less than 15 weeks. We run classes in 8 week blocks and I have just finished teaching my 1st block at my new job. It's a much shorter length of time to get to know one's students but it's nice to have a change.
I have had a lovely group of students during the past 8 weeks and I am so happy to report that they have all passed onto the next level!!! We start our new "blocks" this coming Saturday and I'm looking forward to meeting a new group of students to teach, appreciate and love.

Muttrah Souq is one of my new favorite places for hanging out in Muscat. Such a wonderful feeling to the whole place. The locals seem more accustomed to having foreigners snapping photos which makes it great for photo-taking maniacs like myself! Muttrah Souq! I'll definitely be back. Oh, yeah!

The Happy/Blessed Future Leaders of Oman!!!

This morning, as usual, I arrived 10 minutes early to the classroom. Two of my male students were there and one of them opened up the back door (for female students) to look outside. I never noticed before just how close we were to the mosque from our class so I asked the gentlemen if they would like to have their photo taken. The gentleman on the right is "Mubarek" which means "Blessed" or "Happy" in Arabic. My student on the left is "Khalfan" which means "successor" or "leader"...So there you have it- together they are "the happy, blessed future leaders of Oman!!!" Seriously though, it is a real honor to teach such a great group of young people, knowing that many of them will indeed be in chief positions of the government, leading their country forward. Wow! What an extreme privilege!

The coastal town of Qurayyat/Quriyat

Quriyat is a pleasant little coastal town about 150 kms from Muscat (on quite a dangerous road).

Many tour books have NOTHING written about Quiriyat and if they do, it's mostly just directions through the town in order to get to Sur from Muscat.

"We won't mince words here: there isn't much to see on the island road from Muscat to Sur, but it does provide variety and an alternate return route for your trip down the coast." (from Oman Off-Road)

In town, the main attractions are the fort (which is just over 150 years old), and a Shareestha tree just outside (which is thought to be older than the fort). There are mangroves, which are a great habitat for marine and birdlife. Just offshore is a small island with a watchtower-which is accessible on foot during low tide.

Talk about gorgeous! (And the sunset aint half bad either! ;-))

My honey was a big hit in Qurayyat. All the village girls loved the idea of a photo with her as you can see by their faces! I never would have been able to get such a photo by myself as women/children are very reluctant to allow a foreign male to take their photo.

I had a wonderful birthday about a month ago.

There is nothing more wonderful than being with the love of your life on such a day.

On the other hand, over the years I've had birthday celebrations surrounded by people and many gifts and never felt lonelier.

We live in a society/time of "exalting self" where people make a BIG deal about THEIR OWN birthday (inviting others to a party they themselves prepare! or telling everyone they know not to forget their birthday weeks and weeks in advance!)

In the Bible, there are only 3 mentions of the word "birthday" describing 2 different stories of birthdays; one in the Old Testament and one in the New Testament.
Pharoah's in the Old and Herod's in the New. In both cases, someone "loses their head" because 2 proud men lost their heads in celebrating their own birthday.
"And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharoah's birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand: But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them." (Genesis 40:20-22)
"But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger (large platter). And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison." The point is, "Don't lose your head worrying about your own birthday. Why not instead try to make an effort to make more of a big deal over others' birthdays?!"

Now, I'm a little more comfortable with the idea of being a non-resident of Canada as the truth is, I don't really fit in anywhere while on this terrestrial ball.

This little wireless doohickey from Nawras cost 59 Omani Rials (about $153 CDN) That's a one-time purchase and then the service is 19 OR/month. It's much faster than the ADSL set up ("powerNet") I had in Ibri. Anyway, it's great having this and being able to get online quickly anwhere in the capital city of Muscat. I have been quite busy adjusting to a new work environment and all in the past 2 weeks but I'll try to be more faithful with my blogging now!

Thank God I made it back to Oman! I left Canada on the 20th of August and arrived late on the 21st.
The new job is INCREDIBLE! One quick example: My employers from last year took 3-4 months to get our Resident Card. I got my resident card with my new job in ONE DAY!!! The resident card is extremely important as you cannot do anything without it, including getting a phone hooked up or even copying your house keys!

We don't start teaching till September 6th so we are basically taking care of administrative details and attending meetings for these first 2 weeks.
Not much to report here for now. I just wanted to let family and friends know that I've made it here safe and sound.
I'm really looking forward to this new, exciting chapter in my life living in Muscat, Oman!!!
I know that so many around the world are wrapped up in "back to school mania" and I pray that you are all well rested and ready for God to do new and incredible things in your life in a spirit of anticipation and optimism. (Jeremiah 29:11)

I am having mixed feelings about leaving Oman in 23 hours and 44 minutes. I am SO excited about getting home and spending time with my wonderful family but it is also sad that I won't be able to see the love of my life for at least 6 weeks...
I will miss my students from Ibri College but I am also excited about the possibility of working elsewhere in Oman.
My students have probably been the second best thing about Oman in the past 10 months. (The best one is meeting my wife-to-be of course!)
Here are 2 emails from some of my students to give you an idea of how considerate and sweet they can be.

My last thought as I leave Oman is to ask God's continued blessings upon the land of Oman. More specifically, I pray for the leader of this enchanting country: Sultan Qaboos.
For those of you who haven't heard about Sultan Qaboos (which would be most of my family and friends I'm assuming...), here are some things that my students have written about him when they were asked to write about one of their heros:

As you can see, my students love their leader! It is a refreshing change from the spirit of the world which is to bash and trash world leaders as much as possible. ("In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings." Jude 8)
Several visitors to our church in Ruwi are quite shocked whenever they hear our pastor and our congregration praying for Sultan Qaboos and asking for God's blessings upon his life and upon this country, but that is what God commands. We Christians within Oman thank God for the freedom of gathering for worship which is a royal decree from His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and I, personally, believe that this freedom for Christians is a DIRECT reason for the prosperity that Oman has seen since the 1970s.
"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;" (1 Timothy 2:1-3)

Jabrin Fort is said to be the best fort in a country famous for them. I wouldn't know if it's that impressive as some Omani guy pocked his head out the main entrance door and told us that it was closed (it was only 5:30pm) and to go away. They really do need to post opening and closing hours on such tourist sites!! How annoying to travel all the way to see a place only to be told to go away!

There is a story of "The Bahla Demon". Some Omanis believe that there is a "jinn" (spirit? angel? demon? ghost?) which haunts and has cursed the fort in the past. Some say it was built by magic and whenever they try to renovate it, it is said to fall down in other areas. The fort is currently closed for renovations.

The main feature of Bahla Fort is its 7 mile long (some say 12 miles) walls which were patrolled by sentries night and day. The Fort's internal staircases and walls were built of mud, coated with gypsum and sarooj (a traditional type of mortar) which are as hard and solid as present-day cement. UNESCO has approved Bahla Fort and Wall for inclusion in its World Heritage List.

I first noticed these Arabic messages on hills near the main highway back in November when I started driving from Ibri to church in Muscat every Friday. For the longest time, there were only 4 or 5 messages along the whole 260 km ride but I have noticed many more popping up in the past few weeks and there must be close to a dozen now. I assumed that they must be quotes from the quran (something I have been told would never be written on mountains) but have learned that they are almost always the name of the nearby village. Interesting, huh?!

5 Steps to Making Friends With a Goat

1) Make lots of friendly goat sounds to draw the goat's attention. When they look your way, try your best to have your "I'm a friendly human look" stamped upon your face.

2) Try to notice if the goat is genuinely interested in approaching. Some, like this one below, are so skeptical of humans that you can almost see the fear and hesitation in their eyes. These will not come no matter how long you call out to them.

3) Focusing on the goats that seem somewhat receptive, reach out and let them know that you are their friend and mean them no harm. Make sure you make no sudden movements. Doing so could only reinforce what their non-trusting goat friends have told them about humans - causing them to flee for the hills!

4) Now this step is a tricky one. Listen carefully. You must look deep into the approaching goat's eyes and communicate your desire to be friends using only your eyes. It would be best to stop all goat calls and other foolish noises you made to draw their attention. Think nice, peaceful, happy thoughts and try not to look too freaked out about their rectangular shaped pupils! Remember that they must be just as freaked out by our round pupils! Focus! Again, avoid any quick movements...

5) Now that you have hypnotized your new friend, you will have him eating out of your hand in no time! If he has accepted food from your hand, you will have a new loyal friend bound to stick around till your food runs out, he gets full or something startles him.

Once you have fed them enough food, I'm sure that your new goat friends would even go out on a limb for you!

One thing I will NOT miss about Oman (and the region as a whole) is its constant America and Israel bashing in their newspapers. Writers, and people in general, are always going on and on about "the bias in Western papers" yet do not consider the blatant bias in their own.

I still agree with the main point. America, like ANY country, is far from perfect but it is still far better than the majority of the nations around the world.

Al Hoota Cave: A Beauty Beneath

All 13 photos I took within the cave are quite blurry, as you will see, due to the fact that I am not using flash. "Cameras and video cameras are not allowed in the cave; please leave them at the ticketing booth". I totally understand having this general rule because so many people don't seem to know how to take pictures without flash (same rule in many museums around the world) but the specific rule should be that FLASH is not permitted as it can "cause damage".

Our tour-guide said that "Al Hoota" is Arabic for "deep passage".

Blind fish, small crustacean, mosquito larvae and water beetles live in Al Hoota Cave. While the crustacean and larvae are washed into the cave during floods, the water beetles live in the ground water. The water beetle, hydaena putearius, is only known in two places in Oman.

Caves are lacking light and therefore lacking green plants. Thus, cave animals are dependent on the import of organic materials from outside. Remains of plants and animals, delivered with water and wind, as well as remnants of cave animals, like carcasses and excrements, represent the basis of the cave food chain. The vast majority of animals in Al Hoota Cave are not true cave dwellers. They came either by coincidence with floods or they escaped underground temporarily from heat and drought.

This dripstone figure is known as "The Lion" and represents Al Hoota Cave on the site's main pamphlet, given to tourists upon payment of admission (5.5 RO).

This is a pretty blurry photo but can you notice the water near the bottom? The cave homes an underground lake with natural ventilation, resulting in the phenomenon whereby blind, transparent fish thrive in large shoals. Exclusively found in the area, these fish feed on organic nourishment carried in by rain water. Cave fish feed on organic particles in the mud, while surface fish mainly grate algae from stones.

Here is a picture of a picture of the blind fish (found in the museum on the 2nd floor). Garra barreimiae, the Omani mountain barbell, lives exclusively in the Wadi waters of the Al Hajar Mountains in the Sultanate of Oman and in the UAE. The species was named after the city Al Buraimi. A rare type of these live in the Al Hoota Cave. Those fish are blind and eyeless. Due to the absence of pigmentation, their skin is transparent. Blood vessels under the skin give them a pinkish appearance. On the other hand, fish of the same species from surface populations display functional eyes and a darker skin. (Reminds me of a few jokes: What do you call a fish with no "eyes"? Answer: "fsh" Get it?! ha!ha! "eyes"...as in "i"s...

Okay...one more: What did the fish say when it ran into a wall? Answer: DAM!

There is a spot on the Green Mountain called "Diana's Point", named after the late Diana Princess of Wales who visited the area in the 1980s. Opposite Diana's point is the view of the terraced farms of the Jabal, with a full deep greenery that is rarely seen.

Marilyn told me that the pomegranate is used as a Christian symbol. I "googled" it and sure enough, I read on-line that "the pomegranate is often used to represent the church because of its many seeds in a single fruit". It also represents resurrection with the outer shell representing death and the inner seeds representing immortality.

If you google "largest deserts in the world", it's amazing how many differences there are depending on which site you reach. Some say this desert (The Empty Quarter or "Rub Al Khali" in Arabic) is the 5th largest in the world while others say the 3rd largest. It also depends on whether you are talking about sub-tropical deserts or cold winter deserts.

Like I was saying, there is nothing worse than having unclear directions. This is even more terrible when we are talking about possibly being stranded in the middle of nowhere with little or no gas at temperatures past 40 degrees Celsius!
So, here are specific instructions for the adventurous souls who wish to take a trip out to see the sand dunes. First of all, make sure you have a FULL TANK OF GAS and PLENTY OF WATER. We went on 3/4 of a tank and barely made it back to town on the gas fumes!
At the main Round About (half-way between Ibri College and the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, near Shell station and the car dealerships), head towards Ramlat Khalia. Reset your odometer to zero. This will help you out. After 6.6 kilometers you will see the following sign and a water tower(the square building in the background).

Again, reset your odometer to zero and turn RIGHT. Drive 27 kilometers and you will see the following signs.

Again, I recommend resetting your odometer to zero as you turn right off the main road (just past a radio tower by the way). You may be tempted to stop along the way and take photos of what seem to be impressive sand dunes. Don't do it! They are nothing compared to the dunes awaiting you if you keep going forward! Make sure you have your headlights on. This is the law here for driving on such rough, gravel roads. The speed limit is 80 kms/hour but it is one rough road so I don't recommend going that fast! At about 82 kms, you will start seeing many camps (photography prohibited! and many of the side roads are private areas so don't get off the main path!). You really need to go at least 90 kilometers until you get past all the camps. IF you turn off almost exactly at 92.5 kilometers and head off-road to the dunes on your left, you will even be treated with photo ops with a camel carcass just shy of the dunes.

This is what the road conditions are like most of the way. Some parts are pretty clear sailing, but be warned-sometimes a giant pothole will catch you off-guard and so you really need to be super alert when driving this road! I truly hope this helps anyone out who decides to make the trip. If you go , have fun but be careful! There are quite a few people who have died on this road...

The Elusive Search for the Empty Quarter Desert

NO, this is NOT it. Due to very bad directions given by several sources on the internet (and bad direction following on my part, no doubt), I was not able to find the famous Empty Quarter Desert which is just outside of Ibri. The weather must have been 45 degrees Celsius on this day.

These are some of the scenes I took in driving (incorrectly) on the road towards Salalah.

An Omani version of the Sphinx?!

Well, this can captured exactly how I was feeling after my long wild goose chase! Like all the energy, color and life was being sapped out of me....The next day I went out, once again, but this time armed with directions from my colleague, Baxter, and 2 friends to help out (Said and Jonathan). The Empty Quarter Desert was quite an awesome scene and God willing, I'll share some of that with you tomorrow...

One of the more bizarre round-about art works I've seen! The hands were a little creepy, I thought. Anyway, it makes driving around more interesting because you never know what you're going to see next. Reminded me of the expression, "Busy hands are happy hands. Idleness is the devil's workshop."

The Church at Ghala, Muscat

Like Ruwi, this is a church compound. There are several churches: a catholic church (if you look carefully, you can see a big picture of Mary on a building...), an orthodox church, a normal Protestant Church and even a good Christian bookstore.

This is the front of the Ghala Protestant Church where I attended last Friday.

A wonderful bookshop with tapes, CDs, DVDs, bibles, childrens books...whatever you're looking for.

Services at PCO (The Protestant Church in Oman) in Ghala

This is the 9am service on Friday. It is more of a contemporary service and it is held in Ghala Bosch Hall which is in the back of the church.

This is Good Shepherd Chapel, Ghala where a more traditional service is held at 11am on Fridays. They have Communion every week. In addition, they have Arabic Worship Service on Thursdays at 7pm in Zwemer Hall, Ghalah.
